Growth-Differentiation Factor-15 at Risk Stratification in Diabetes Patients: Usefulness, Discrepancies, and Hype

Alexander E. Berezin

Article Type: Mini Review | First Published: September 17, 2015

Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) is a stress-responsive cytokine, which belongs to super family of the transforming growth factor beta. GDF-15 is widely presented in the various cells (macrophages, vascular smooth muscle cells, adipocytes, cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts), tissues (adipose tissue, vessels, tissues of central and peripheral nervous system) and organs (heart, brain, liver, placenta) and it plays an important role in the regulation of the inflammatory respon...

Bio-Active Designer Materials and Dentures: from Design to Application

V Tamara Perchyonok, John Souza, Shengmiao Zhang, Desigar Moodley and Sias Grobler

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: November 02, 2015

The bio-active modified polymethyl methacrylate denture resins (PMMA) were prepared by dispersion of the corresponding component in glycerol and acetic acid with the addition of chitosan gelling agent. The release behaviors at physiological pH and also under acidic conditions and stability of the antioxidant-chitosan were also evaluated. Mechanical performance such as tensile strength and compressive strength were measured as well bio-adhesive studies were investigated in order to assess the sui...

Facile DNA Detection Based on Fluorescence Switching of A Hydrophobic AIE Dye-Labeled Peptide Nucleic Acid Probe by Aggregation/Disaggregation

Koji Kawamura, Ai Matsumoto and Takashi Murashima

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 21, 2015

A novel, facile DNA detection method based on aggregation/disaggregation of an AIE (aggregation induced emission) dye-labeled peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probe was developed. This PNA probe plays the role of both target recognition and signal emission, thus it can quantify the target DNA without requiring additives such as intercalators and can distinguish the target from other sequences....

Biomedical Applications of Natural Polymer Based Nanofibrous Scaffolds

Preethi GU, Manu M Joseph, Unnikrishnan BS, Shiji R and Sreelekha TT

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: September 17, 2015

Nanotechnology is one of the most popular branches of science in the current decade where nanofiber scaffolds (NS) attain principal attraction. NS are composed of several nanometer to micrometer diameter fibers similar in nature to collagen, keratin and elastin fibers of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and helps in cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation. NS with desired features can be fabricated using various chemical, physical and biological methods such as electrospinning, phase se...

Cross-Cultural Research on Internet Addiction: A Systematic Review

Olatz Lopez-Fernandez

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: October 29, 2015

Internet addiction (IA) is the most studied behavioral addiction. However, few studies have been conducted that simultaneously include several countries to attain an inter-cultural and international perspective on the phenomenon. The aim of this systematic review is to observe the characteristics of cross-cultural IA studies, in order to explore (i) their classification, (ii) the cultures involved, (iii) the IA issues treated, and (iv) the commonalities and differences among cultures. For this r...

Flaxseed Oil Decreases Craving for Chocolate: Preliminary Results

Pedro Luis Prior, Anna Carolina Ramos, Jaqueline Kalleian Eserian, Jucara Zaparoli and Jose Carlos Fernandes Galduroz

Article Type: Brief Communication | First Published: October 22, 2015

Chocolate is recognized as a type of food that contains many psychoactive components. Many studies have shown that some people may present compulsive symptoms such as the difficulty in resisting the urge to consume chocolate. On the other hand, there is evidence that omega 3 deficiency results in a dopaminergic hypofunctioning of the mesocortical and mesolimbic pathways related to reinforcing effects. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of flaxseed oil (rich in om...

Cyberaddictions and Gambling Addiction: A Reflection on Social Markers and Paths of Intervention

Amnon Jacob Suissa

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: September 30, 2015

The concept of cyberaddiction is far from being unanimously accepted by scientists. The same is true of addiction to videogames or to Facebook. While certain researchers wished to see this condition included in the DSM-5, others question the operational and practical basis for the diagnostic criteria. Some see cyberaddiction as a problem linked more to time management, to brain deficits, to an impulse-control disorder or to psychosocial conditions while others consider it to be a pre-existing co...

Prevalence of Anti-Gastric Parietal Cell Antibodies and Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Matthew B Carroll and Christopher M Tessier

Article Type: Original Research Article | First Published: October 14, 2015

Recent studies are lacking in assessing presence of both the anti-gastric parietal cell (GPC) antibody and concurrent vitamin B12 deficiency in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients in the era of more aggressive disease modifying therapy. We recruited patients to one of three arms: those with RA, autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), and no known autoimmune disorder (controls). A one-time serum assessment of vitamin B12 level, methylmalonic acid, and anti-GPC antibody level was performed....

Management of Occupational Shoulder Injuries in Primary Care

Glenn Brown, Kayne Park and Ryan T Bicknell

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: September 28, 2015

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and is comprised of an intricate complex of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Due to thismobility and heavy reliance on arms, shoulder injuries are one of the most debilitating and common disorders afflicted in the workplace. They have been categorized as a high impact injury by the workplace safety and insurance board (WSIB) of Ontario due to the long recovery and return to work (RTW) times....

Subarachnoid Haemorrhage in Patient with Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (Churg and Strauss): A Probable Central Nervous Localisation of Vasculitis

Lescuyer Sylvain, Rondeau-Lutz Murielle, Martinez Camille, Rakotoarivelo Hanta-Nirina and Weber Jean-Christophe

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: October 22, 2015

We report the case of a 43 year-old patient with Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). He was diagnosed with EGPA because of asthma, naso-sinusal polyposis, asymmetrical peroneal neuritis, general signs, eosinophilic count at 4000/mm3, CRP at 50 mg/l and positive pANCA with anti-MPO specificity at 74 U/ml. Arteriography was normal. He was treated by methylprednisolone and cyclophosphamide. Remission was complete. EGPA is a rare primary vasculitis. Only seventeen cases of central nervous haemorrhages h...
