Article Type: Case Report | First Published: February 10, 2020

We present to you the case of 77 YO female with PMH of DM, A fib and recent H/O ascending cholangitis and cholecystectomy complicated by ruptured gallbladder with bile peritonitis and JP drain placement. After the discharge she was having diarrhea and was tested positive for C diff and was started on oral vancomycin. Almost about 2 weeks after the discharge she started to develop sudden onset of right leg pain, because of that she was taken to the ED of outside hospital where there was a suspicion of DVT, but duplex came out negative. So was send to our center for further evaluation and manage...

Early Blood Brain Barrier Traversal by Trypanosoma Brucei Brucei Strains: A Phenomenon of Laboratory Strains or Field Strains as Well?

Monica Namayanja, Gloria Grace Akurut and George W Lubega

Article Type: Short Communication | First Published: February 08, 2020

Trypanosoma brucei brucei in mice, the experimental model of African Trypanosomiasis, is known to begin crossing the blood-brain barrier between 9-13 days post-infection, which is also considered the commencement of the late stage of the disease. A few recent reports however, reported traversal as early as two hours to a few days. In these reports laboratory strains were used thus this study sought to find out if this early brain invasion is phenomenon of laboratory strains or also field isolates. In this study the blood-brain barrier traversal of three Trypanosoma brucei brucei strains: A fie...

Systematization of Functional Training Sessions to Benefit Physical Fitness for Daily Activities in Older People

Antonio Gomes de Resende-Neto and Marzo Edir Da Silva-Grigoletto

Article Type: Editorial | First Published: February 10, 2020

Tools applied today in the Functional Training (FT) have long been used in general fitness programs, but systematic use and scientific interest are recent phenomena. Thus, there are many methodological conflicts and divergences in the prescriptions of this method. For example, some studies have associated FT with the use of instability in many exercises, while others use unstable bases in a small portion of training, or simply do not use. Thus, there is still an absence of a systematic FT model in the studies available in the literature, and for this reason the objective of this editorial was ...

Cancer cell presents a dynamic nature that evolves over time in its microenvironment through a complicating molecular and cellular interaction network. Despite the progress already achieved in the imaging technologies and the molecular tools used for tumor cell diagnosis and treatment approaches, metastasis still remains a major hindering factor that limits clinical outcomes. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) present the potential in providing critical information to understand the metastasis process, the tumor cell and genome heterogeneity, in a way to overcome cancer therapy bottlenecks and imp...

Palmoplantar Erythrodysesthesia Associated with Capecitabine, Epidemiological Mapping and Risk Factors in Morocco

Tarik Hanafi, Hicham Titou, Hasna Kerrouch, Rachid Frikh, Naoufal Hjira and Mohammed Boui

Article Type: Brief Reports | First Published: January 27, 2020

A prospective cohort of a descriptive and analytical study, including sixty-one cases of Palmoplantar erythrodysesthesia in patients treated with capecitabine. The objective of this study is to determine an epidemiological mapping of Palmoplantar erythrodysesthesia in cancer patients on capecitabine treatment and to identify possible risk factors. The incidence of PPE was 64%. The median age of the patients who developed PPE was 54 years. 70% of the cohort was female, breast neoplasia represented 62% of all cases, 73% of these patients developed PPE. Colorectal neoplasia represented 27% of all...

Hyperpigmentation Associated with Anti-Tumor Chemotherapy: A Series of 54 Cases, Demo-Topographic Aspects and Interest of the Dermatological Intervention

Tarik Hanafi, Hicham Titou, Hasna Kerrouch, Rachid Frikh, Naoufal Hjira and Mohammed Boui

Article Type: Case Series | First Published: January 27, 2020

Three-year prospective study, from April 2016 to May 2019, including patients followed in oncology for malignant neoplasia, who developed hyperpigmentation following the start of antitumor chemotherapy for digestive, mammary and hematologic neoplasms, including the following molecules: 5 Fluorouracil, Tegafur, Cyclophosphamides, and Doxorubicin, in an isolated or combined mode. The study enrolled 54 patients, with an average age of 48 years and extremes ranging from 22 years to 67 years, with a sex ratio M/W of 1.2. The most affected phototypes were III and IV which accounted for 63% of cases....

Late-Life Alzheimer's Disease (AD) Detection Using Pruned Decision Trees

Gopi Battineni, Nalini Chintalapudi and Francesco Amenta

Article Type: Original Research | First Published: February 08, 2020

Machine Learning (ML) is a contemporary technique of artificial intelligence. These methods are exponentially rising in the medical field, especially in diagnosis and disease predictions. The present study was aimed to develop a decision tree model to predict late-life Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A dataset of 150 subjects along with 373 MRI sessions demographic values were considered in this paper. Pruned decision trees (J48) were employed to do predictive analysis on AD subjects. Model validation was conducted with cross fold (k = 10) methods. Performance measures were evaluated by accuracy, ...

Mixed Zone between Drug-Induced Hyperpigmentation and Generalized Fixed Pigmented Erythema

Tarik Hanafi, Amine Essaoudi, Hicham Titou, Hasna Kerrouch, Rachid Frikh, Naoufal Hjira and Mohammed Boui

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: January 31, 2020

We report a particular case of fixed drug eruption (FDE), in its erythematous and pigmented form, as a fixed pigmented erythema (FPE), which manifests in a generalized form, evolving for three years, and discuss the imputability to piroxicam and the Ramipril/Hydrochlorothiazide combination. Indeed, chronological, semiological, bibliographic criteria, were imprecise and non-discriminatory. We ended up retaining the diagnosis of fixed pigmented erythema (FPE) of particular diffuse presentation induced probably by piroxicam, based on clinical, histological and evolutive criteria. However, it rema...

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Complicating Hidradenitis Suppurativa in an HIV-Positive Patient

Tarik Hanafi, Hicham Titou, Hasna Kerrouch, Rachid Frikh, Naoufal Hjira and Mohammed Boui

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: January 27, 2020

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), also called Acne inversa, is a Chronic inflammatory, suppurative, fistulizing disease, with a risk of malignant degeneration to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We report an intriguing case of a patient who developed an aggressive form of HS within a very short time of nine years, indeed, the patient was infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human papilloma virus (HPV). We believe that the oncogenic role of HPV was increased, given the very fast degeneration and propose a surgical cure at an earlier stage, particularly when a very close follow-up...

Non-Typhoidal Salmonella Meningitis in an Adult Patient with HIV Infection: The Hostage-Taking Situation. Is There Any Solution?

Tarik Hanafi, Hicham Titou, Hasna Kerrouch, Rachid Frikh, Naoufal Hjira and Mohammed Boui

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: January 25, 2020

We report a case of Non-Typhoidal Salmonella meningitis (NTS) in adult HIV patient with many relapses despite well-conducted treatment, we compare this situation to a hostage-taking situation, perpetrated by NTS, taking the body of HIV patient as a hostage who cannot get rid of this germ. This is a clinical alert to discuss the efficiency of prolonged oral administration of Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole in preventing relapse and a whistleblower for the urgency of developing a vaccine....
