Ultrasonography as an Evaluation Tool in a Randomized Controlled Trial Assessing Balneotherapy Effects in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Santos Isabel, Vasconcelos Jose Carlos, Ribeiro Claudia, Moreira Carolina, Magalhães Alexandre, Cantista Pedro and Vasconcelos Carlos

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: August 06, 2018

A prospective controlled clinical trial, not blinded, randomly assigned of patients with rheumatoid arthritis accordingly to the American College of Rheumatology criteria. The Balneotherapy group received Balneotherapy's throughout 21 days in S. Jorge Spa. The main outcome was hand/wrist ultrasonography measured at the same moments in the two groups, and McNemar's tests were used to compare changes in ecographics signals, with a 5% statistical significance level. Secondary outcomes were taken at same time for HAQ-DI and DAS28....

Metabolic Diseases and Crystal Induced Arthropathies Technic of Non-Staining Histologic Sections - A Comparative Study of Standard Stains and Histochemical Reactions

Miklos Bely and Agnes Apathy

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: August 04, 2018

Metabolic diseases and crystal induced arthropathies are characterized by deposits of crystal and/or non-crystalline (amorphous) calcium phosphates in synovial membranes (synovium) and periarticular soft tissues. Bone and cartilage may also be involved, and crystals may be present in the synovial fluid as well. Foreign bodies and refractile artefacts may vary the histopathological findings. Different crystals (with or without foreign bodies and/or refractile artefacts) may exist simultaneously in synovial fluid, synovium or adjacent bone and cartilage....

Knee Compression Loading When Lying Supine: Effects of Foot Position on Mattress

Buckley JG, Nichols S and Bhattacharjee C

Article Type: Original Research | First Published: June 16, 2018

Knee loading from standing for long periods has been shown to cause degenerative effects in knee cartilage, and this has been linked to the onset and progression of osteoarthritis. When lying supine because the heel protrudes 'outwards' from the back of the leg, contact forces are concentrated at the heel and act to 'push' the knee into full extension. The resulting knee-moment (compression loading) can be experienced for prolonged periods....

Visual HRCT Score to Determine Severity and Prognosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Ricardo Peris Sanchez, Estrella Fernandez-Fabrellas, Gustavo Juan Samper, Maria Luisa Domingo Montanana and Lidia Navarro Vilar

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: August 16, 2018

High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is an essential technique for the diagnosis and follow-up of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), but it is not routinely used to evaluate severity. A semi-quantitative HRCT score was developed to determine its relation with physiologic variables, to assess severity and fibrosis progression, and to establish prognostic factors....

Therapeutic Efficacy of Subthreshold Laser Photocoagulation using a Conventional Pattern Scan Laser for Macular Edema in a Retrospective Study

Tomoyasu Shiraya, Satoshi Kato and Fumiyuki Araki

Article Type: Original Research | First Published: August 11, 2018

Subthreshold laser photocoagulation has emerged and is changing minimally invasive treatment for macular edema (ME) affected by retinal vascular diseases. However, this laser method requires specific photocoagulator, and it cannot be introduced at each facility. We investigated the efficacy of subthreshold laser photocoagulation using a conventional pattern scan laser (PS-STLT) in treating ME in clinical practice....

The Impact of Demographic Changes on the Presentation and Outcome of Stroke: Experiences of the Oldest Old in the Murrumbidgee Region

Alice Powell, Martin Jude, Stephen Kerr, Jenna Mewburn, Katherine Mohr and Paul Finucane

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: August 10, 2018

The proportion of older people in the Australian population is increasing, heralding a change in how illness presents as well as the profile of people presenting with illness. This changing disease profile is most strikingly observed in conditions which disproportionately affect the old and particularly the oldest old. It is exemplified by stroke which is a leading cause of death and disability in Australia with 70% of stroke patients aged 65 and older....

BMI in Penetrating Abdominal Injury: Correlation with Morbidity

Rajiv K Chander, Hoan K Bui, John Phair, Matthew Carnevale, Samuel Kigongo and Robert V Madlinger

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: August 10, 2018

In 1960, Shaftan, et al. recognized that mandatory laparotomy for penetrating abdominal injury (PAI) resulted in negative findings in approximately one-third of patients, with significant associated morbidity and mortality. This was underlined by a 37 percent negative laparotomy rate after mandatory laparotomy for truncal stab wounds. Superior critical care facilities, advances in interventional radiology and the increased availability of abdominal ultrasonography, focused abdominal sonography in trauma (FAST), computed tomography (CT) and laparoscopy may have enabled more selective non-operat...
