Histopathologic Detection and Identification of Infectious Agents in Granulomatous Inflammation: Comparison with Culture

Sarah Hackman, MD and Daniel D Mais, MD

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: December 09, 2019

Granulomas in surgical specimens, especially within lung and lymph nodes, commonly have an infectious etiology. Granulomatous tissue is usually sent to both surgical pathology for tissue examination and to clinical microbiology laboratories for culture. We performed a retrospective review and comparison of histochemical stains and clinical microbiology culture results in 132 surgical pathology granuloma specimens to determine the utility of tissue morphological examination for detection and identification of fungi and acid-fast bacilli as compared to clinical microbiology culture....

Client Satisfaction with Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV Services in Public Hospitals of Hadiya Zone, Southern Ethiopia

Bahailu Balcha, Desta Erkalo and Tilahun Beyene

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: December 12, 2019

Prevention of mother-to-child transmission is a term used to describe a comprehensive package of services intended to reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The vertical virus transmission from mother to child accounts for more than 90% of pediatric Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. Published studies on the client satisfaction with PMTCT services’ provision in Ethiopia are generally limited. Even fewer studies do examine client satisfaction with the PMTCT services. Therefore, this study is aimed to assess the client satisfaction with Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmiss...

Evaluation of the Content of YouTube Videos about Vaginismus

Yeliz KAYA, Coskun KAYA, MD and Pelin PALAS KARACA

Article Type: Original Articl e | First Published: December 07, 2019

A search for vaginismus was performed on YouTube in January 5, 2019. Two researchers watched and analyzed each video's overall information and scientific content and rated it as good, fair or poor as a co-decision. for their sources, suggestions and information contents (good, fair or poor). The study suggests that the videos at You- Tube could not be a reliable source of for patients with vaginismus. Health professions should be encouraged to upload more videos with good content and the patients with vaginismus should be warned about the unedited videos uploaded by laypersons and canalized to...

Utility of Mean Platelet Volume to Predict Significant Thrombocytopenia and Complications in Dengue

Anupam Brahma, MBBS, Prasit Kumar Ghosh, MD, Utpal Goswami, MD and Saswati Majumdar, MD

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: December 11, 2019

Dengue fever is one of the most important emerging infectious diseases constituting important contribution in global burden of disease. Platelet transfusion is required in the patients when they develop Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) or thrombocytopenia below 20,000/ without hemorrhage. Serial platelet counts are used to monitor the patients. In this study we investigated whether Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) could be used as a tool to predict development of significant thrombocytopenia, DHF and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). This may help in triage of high-risk patients and readiness of the ...

Is it Valuable for Top Elite Footballers to Adopt a Personal Strength and Conditioning Coach? A Brief Report

Rafael Grazioli, Pedro Lopez, Leonel Villeroy, Leonel Alvim, Bernardo Bock, Natalia Nunes, Filipe Veeck, Martinho Inacio, Carlos LF. Machado, Ronei Silveira Pinto and Eduardo Lusa Cadore

Article Type: Brief Report | First Published: December 16, 2019

Some athletes have been particularly adopted personal strength and conditioning coaches during their day to day routines. However, there are no studies about this complementary management. The present study aimed to screen injury incidence, match play, and market value parameters of topelite soccer players during seasons with and without a personal strength and conditioning coach. After implementing the personal training interventions, there was an individual decrease in number of injuries (50%) and days lost due to injuries (77%) that was accompanied by increases in the number of games, playe...

Characterization of the Olfactory Pathway by Anisotropic Diffusion Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging in a Pediatric Population

Hector Ramirez-Flores, Eduardo Barragan-Perez, Pilar Dies-Suarez, Diana Platas-Neri, Julio Garcia and Silvia Hidalgo-Tobon

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: December 09, 2019

One of the techniques of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance is Diffusion Tensor Imaging, which measures the speed of diffusion of extracellular water molecules found in tissues. Diffusion tensor imaging allows virtual dissections of functional white matter tracts in the human brain in vivo using regions of interest (ROI). The intrinsic trajectories of the olfactory pathway that can be identified using the diffusion- weighted magnetic resonance technique provide an important anatomical reference for the evaluation of clinical disorders commonly associated with the olfactory system in the brains of pedi...

Acute Lyme Arthritis Presenting in Bilateral Hips of an Elderly Patient: A Case Report

Lawrence M Asprec, Mitchell K Freedman, Jeffrey A Gehret and George W Young

Article Type: Case report | First Published: December 09, 2019

A 70-year-old male presented with a chief complaint of 10 days of lower back and bilateral lower extremity pain. He described sudden onset of intense, sharp bilateral anterior thigh pain radiating to the medial calves intermittently and without paresthesia, bowel or bladder incontinence, fevers, rashes or weight change. His gait was found to be antalgic and slow. Strength, sensation, and reflexes were intact in both legs. X-ray imaging of bilateral hips revealed mild osteoarthritis bilaterally. An MRI of the bilateral hips showed bilateral hip effusions with synovial proliferation and degenera...

Isolated Neuropathy of the Motor Branch of the Ulnar Nerve Sparing the Hypothenar Muscle and Ulnar Intrinsic Groups due to Compressive Lesion: A Case Report

Lawrence M Asprec, MD, Mitchell K Freedman, Pedro K Beredjiklian and George W Young

Article Type: Case report | First Published: December 09, 2019

A 57-year-old man developed progressive weakness over 3 months in his right hand without sensory abnormalities. Clinical and electrodiagnostic examination revealed abnormalities in the FDIO. Clinical examination supported an abnormal AdP. Hypothenar muscle groups were intact, suggestive of an ulnar nerve lesion in the palm, an uncommon area of entrapment. MRI confirmed a ganglion cyst between the third and fourth metacarpal bases, compressing the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve. After removal of the cyst and neurolysis of the ulnar motor branch, AdP and FDIO strength improved five months...

Importance of Genetic Polymorphisms (Rs662 and Rs854560) of the Paraoxonase-1 Gene as Risk Factor for Acute Ischemic Stroke in Turkish Population

Nevin Karakus, Nursah Basol, Serbulent Yigit, Pinar Cogas, Tuba Ceviz, Ali Kablan and Osman Demir

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: December 11, 2019

Allele frequencies of PON1 gene Q192R and L55M polymorphisms didn’t demonstrate any significant differences between patients and controls (p > 0.05). However, genotype frequencies were significantly different between patients and controls in terms of Q192R polymorphism (p = 0.030). Statistically significant correlations were observed between systolic and diastolic blood pressures of patients and L55M polymorphism (p = 0.017 and p = 0.039, respectively). Heterozygosity for the both Q192R and L55M polymorphisms demonstrated a statistically significant association with acute ischemic stroke in ...
