Cyberaddictions and Gambling Addiction: A Reflection on Social Markers and Paths of Intervention

Amnon Jacob Suissa

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: September 30, 2015

The concept of cyberaddiction is far from being unanimously accepted by scientists. The same is true of addiction to videogames or to Facebook. While certain researchers wished to see this condition included in the DSM-5, others question the operational and practical basis for the diagnostic criteria. Some see cyberaddiction as a problem linked more to time management, to brain deficits, to an impulse-control disorder or to psychosocial conditions while others consider it to be a pre-existing co...

Prevalence of Anti-Gastric Parietal Cell Antibodies and Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Matthew B Carroll and Christopher M Tessier

Article Type: Original Research Article | First Published: October 14, 2015

Recent studies are lacking in assessing presence of both the anti-gastric parietal cell (GPC) antibody and concurrent vitamin B12 deficiency in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients in the era of more aggressive disease modifying therapy. We recruited patients to one of three arms: those with RA, autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), and no known autoimmune disorder (controls). A one-time serum assessment of vitamin B12 level, methylmalonic acid, and anti-GPC antibody level was performed....

Management of Occupational Shoulder Injuries in Primary Care

Glenn Brown, Kayne Park and Ryan T Bicknell

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: September 28, 2015

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and is comprised of an intricate complex of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Due to thismobility and heavy reliance on arms, shoulder injuries are one of the most debilitating and common disorders afflicted in the workplace. They have been categorized as a high impact injury by the workplace safety and insurance board (WSIB) of Ontario due to the long recovery and return to work (RTW) times....

Subarachnoid Haemorrhage in Patient with Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (Churg and Strauss): A Probable Central Nervous Localisation of Vasculitis

Lescuyer Sylvain, Rondeau-Lutz Murielle, Martinez Camille, Rakotoarivelo Hanta-Nirina and Weber Jean-Christophe

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: October 22, 2015

We report the case of a 43 year-old patient with Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). He was diagnosed with EGPA because of asthma, naso-sinusal polyposis, asymmetrical peroneal neuritis, general signs, eosinophilic count at 4000/mm3, CRP at 50 mg/l and positive pANCA with anti-MPO specificity at 74 U/ml. Arteriography was normal. He was treated by methylprednisolone and cyclophosphamide. Remission was complete. EGPA is a rare primary vasculitis. Only seventeen cases of central nervous haemorrhages h...

Target Frequency Analysis of functional MRI Data

Michael A. Frolich, Paul Jung and Shannon Starr

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: November 2, 2015

The field of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has grown in usage, applications, and complexity. The results of a general linear model (GLM) analysis vary from one investigator to another as they depend on image preprocessing, model choices and physiological assumptions. There is a need for a simple, efficient and consistent analysis method. Methods: We propose the target frequency analysis (TFA) as an intuitive, computationally efficient method to analyze data from block design fMRI ...

Overcoming Endocrine Resistance in Hormone-Receptor Positive Advanced Breast Cancer-The Emerging Role of CDK4/6 Inhibitors

Ciara C O'Sullivan

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: October 14, 2015

Dysregulation of the cyclin D and cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) pathway in cancer cells may inhibit senescence and promote cellular proliferation. By using various different mechanisms, malignant cells may increase cyclin D-dependent activity. The cyclin D-cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4/6)-retinoblastoma (Rb) pathway controls the cell cycle restriction point, and is commonly dysregulated in breast cancer; making it a rational target for anticancer therapy....

Evaluation of Zinc, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid and Iron Levels and Thyroid Functions in Patients with Chronic Telogen Effluvium

Pinar Ozuguz, Seval Dogruk Kacar, Ozlem Ekiz and Semsettin Karaca

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 21, 2015

Telogen effluvium (TE) is a hair disorder characterized by abrupt onset, diffuse, self-limited and excessive shedding of club hairs. The purpose of this study was to investigate serum zinc, vitamin B12 and folic acid levels as well as parameters of iron metabolism and thyroid functions in patients with chronic telogen effluvium (CTE) and compare the results to those of the controls. Methods: In this study, a total of 260 patients with CTE who were admitted to the outpatient dermatology clinic of...

Adenomyoma of Endocervical Type of the Cervix Uteri with Reactive Atypia and Goblet Cell Differentiation - A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Steffen Hauptmann, Katja Mohr and Regina Grosse

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: September 30, 2015

In this report we present the rare case of a 53 years old woman with an adenomyoma of endocervical type of the cervix uteri with reactive atypia and focal goblet cell differentiation. The epithelium of the lesion was MUC5AC positive, making this marker invalid in excluding the most important differential diagnosis of this lesion, the minimal deviation adenocarcinoma. The most relevant literature is reviewed and the differential diagnoses are discussed....

Case Report: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: 2 Cases Diagnosed and Treated Using IADPSG Criteria. The Debate Goes On

Alejandra Duran Rodriguez-Hervada, Amparo Sabate Garcia, Consuelo Aunon Pereda, Carla Assaf-Balut, Miguel A Rubio, Nuria Izquierdo Mendez, Noelia Perez Perez, Miguel A Herraiz Martinez, and Alfonso L Calle-Pascual

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: September 28, 2015

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is an important public health problem, given its high prevalence and its association with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Recent evidence has confirmed that the risk of adverse outcomes is a continuum, increasing as maternal blood glucose levels rise. Furthermore, women with prior GDM are a high-risk group for the future development of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease....

Salviae and Cinnamomi Herbal Medicines have Antiviral Activity against a Broad Range of Human Immunodeficiency Virus

Fu-Shi Quan, Young Jae Lee, Richard W Compans and Sang-Moo Kang

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: October 23, 2015

Development of broadly effective anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 compounds is a high priority since the number of individuals having HIV infections continues to grow worldwide and vaccines are not available yet. From herbal extracts commonly used in humans, Salviae miltiorrhiza (Salviae), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Cinnamomi), Astragali Radix (Astragali), Asari Radix et Rhizome (Asari), Panax Ginseng (Korean red ginseng), we screened candidate herbal medicines and investigated their antiviral ...
