Multidetector Row Computed Tomography Evaluation in Pediatric Heart Diseases-Additional Information to Echocardiography and Conventional Cardiac Catherterization

Yasunobu Hayabuchi, Miho Sakata and Shoji Kagami

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: February 20, 2015

Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) scanners are a widely available, accurate, and noninvasive technique for the diagnosis of pediatric cardiovascular disorders. A lots of articles published regarding the usefulness of MDCT mostly describe that it can be an alternative to the invasive catheterization and angiography. The unique diagnostic features of this imaging modality have been largely ignored or disregarded. We presented the pathological conditions that cannot be diagnosed by conve...

Background: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a common condition in the elderly and often occurs together with Heart Failure (HF). The differences between elderly patients with HF according to the presence or absence of AF were analysed. Material and methods: Patient data were collected from consecutively admitted patients 75 years of age and older with acute decompensated HF from the Spanish National Heart Failure Registry (RICA) with data retrieved from internal medicine settings....

Aylin Koc, Sumru Onal, Aysin Tulunay, Haluk Kazokoglu, Emel Eksioglu Demiralp, Haner Direskeneli and Sule Yavuz

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: February 13, 2015

Purpose: To evaluate the phonotypical and functional effect of interferon alfa-2a therapy on peripheral blood CD4+CD25+ T regulatory (Treg) cells in patients with Behcet uveitis. Methods: Blood was taken from 5 patients with refractory Behcetpanuveitis and 5 age-matched healthy controls. Flow cytometric analysis of CD4+CD25+Treg cells was performed. CD4+CD25+Treg cells were separated by magnetic-assisted cell sorting and co-cultured. Cytokine levels in the supernatants were determined by ELISA.....

Generation of Retinal Progenitor Cell Sheets which Differentiate into Rhodopsin Positive Photoreceptors from Mouse iPS Cell Derived Retinal Progenitor Cell Clones

Noboru Suzuki, Jun Shimizu, Chieko Hirotsu, Erika Takada, Nagisa Arimitsu, Yuji Ueda, Naruyoshi Fujiwara, Tomoko Suzuki and Kenji Takai

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: February 05, 2015

We previously reported successful establishment of retinal progenitor cell clones. Here, we cultured them on temperature reversible gelation polymer, with supplementation of several chemokines. The retinal progenitor cell clones formed a cell sheet with extension of their axon like processes. RT-PCR of the cell sheets after two week culture, they were positive for retinal ganglion cell markers, bipolar cell markers, and photoreceptor cell markers. Immunohistochemistry suggested that the cell she...

Lauren E. McCullough, Jia Chen, Alexandra J. White, Xinran Xu, Yoon Hee Cho, Patrick T. Bradshaw, Sybil M. Eng, Susan L. Teitelbaum, Mary Beth Terry, Gail Garbowski, Alfred I. Neugut, Hanina Hibshoosh, Regina M. Santella, Marilie D. Gammon

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: February 09, 2015

Introduction: Breast cancer, the leading cancer diagnosis among American women, is positively associated with postmenopausal obesity and little or no recreational physical activity (RPA). However, the underlying mechanisms of these associations remain unresolved. Aberrant changes in DNA methylation may represent an early event in carcinogenesis, but few studies have investigated associations between obesity/RPA and gene methylation, particularly in postmenopausal breast tumors where these lifest...

Narcissism: It's more Complex than High Self-Esteem

Marion Wallace

Article Type: Editorial | First Published: January 30, 2015

Narcissism is often used synonymously with high or inflated selfe-steem. Indeed, narcissism is illustrated by individuals with grandiose self-views and a need for admiration. The origins of the term stem from Greek mythology where a young man named Narcissus became enamored with his reflection. However, individuals with higher levels of narcissistic traits make up a unique combination of high and vulnerable self-esteem. Since narcissism is more complex than high self-esteem, individuals with hig...

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: February 08, 2015

The aim of this research is to study the mechanism of action of the newly synthesized substance - Thiazoline Ammonium 4-Chlorophenyl-2-Hydroxy-4-Oxo-2-Butenoate (FS-169), which possesses the direct anticoagulant activity. The research was conducted with the use of 'АPG4-02-P' coagulometer. For the purposes of the study the rabbit plasma was used. The results show that FS-169 effectively changes Partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time indicators. However, FS-169 has no influence on...
