Determination of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR), KRAS and BRAF Mutation in Non Small Cell Lung Cancers Using Biofilm Chip Based Microarray Technology

Ozlem Ceren Gunizi, Gulay Ozbilim and Mualla Ozcan

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: April 26, 2019

Of the 96 patients included in the study, 58 were adenocarcinomas, 30 were squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), and 8 were large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC). While EGFR mutation was detected in 14 (24.1%) of the adenocarcinoma patients, KRAS mutation was detected in 12 (20.6%) patients. BRAF mutation was observed in 1 patient with adenocarcinoma (1.7%). KRAS mutation was observed in only 1 o...

Hundred patients (100) presenting a complication after BPH surgery were included in this study in a total of 312 open prostatectomies performed. The post-operative complication rate was 32%. Seventy percent of the patients had at least one complication. Grade I and Grade II complications according to the modified Clavien's classification system were the most represented (87%). Two patients (2) died in the immediate postoperative period (Grade V). The presence of urethral catheter before surgery was identified as a risk factor for complication. A statistically significant difference was found i...

Behavioral Factors Associated with Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Young University Students - A Cross-Sectional Study

Elena Hadjimbei, George Botsaris, Vassilis Gekas and Andrie G Panayiotou

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: April 25, 2019

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was found to be average for the majority of young adults, with 21.8% being classified as low adherers, and 26.9% as high adherers. A higher health habit score was associated with higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet (0.614 higher average adherence (95% CI: 1.07 to 1.55) for one unit change in health habit score). About 63% of students reported consuming breakfast on a regular basis, while half consumed three or fewer meals per day. The main person responsible for preparing meals at home were the parents (63.7%). A little over half of study participants...

Immunology of the Spontaneous Remission of Cancer

Behzad Niakan, Pharm D

Article Type: Hypotheses | First Published: April 25, 2019

An immunological mechanism has been suggested for the case reports of the spontaneous remission of cancer after an acute infection. The basic suggestion made is that a few acute inflammatory responses are occurring at about the same time in these cancer patients. Furthermore, it is suggested that a few acute inflammatory responses occurring at about the same time may negate the inhibitory effect of systemic inflammation on innate immunity. It is suggested that the activation of innate immunity cells (NK cells, Dendritic cells, etc.) in these cancer patients results in the spontaneous remission...

Improvement in Nutritional Status is Associated with Achieving an Adequate Gait Speed at Discharge in Elderly Patients Hospitalized with Acute Heart Failure

Satoru Sakuragi, Nobuhisa Kodera, Toshihiro Iida, Takashi Yamada, Mitsutaka Nakashima, Atsushi Mori, Yuji Koide, Tadashi Wada, Kenji Kawamoto, Machiko Tanakaya and Yusuke Katayama

Elderly patients have impaired physical function, which is further reduced by the incidence of hospitalization for heart failure. In these patients, nutritional status also deteriorates during hospitalization, which may cause impairment in their physical function. In this study, we repeatedly measured physical function using gait speed (GS) during hospitalization, and evaluated the factors including nutritional status that are associated with GS at discharge in elderly patients with acute heart failure who underwent exercise training....
