Multimodal Treatment of Breast Cancer Liver Metastases Based on Hepatic Resection and Microwave Coagulo-Necrotic Therapy (MCN)

Yuko Takami, Susumu Eguchi, Masaki Tateishi, Tomoki Ryu, Kazuhiro Mikagi, Yoshiyuki Wada and Hideki Saitsu

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: January 11, 2016

Background: Generally it is rare to select surgery for treating breast cancer liver metastases (BCLM), but we have carried out aggressively surgical treatment to BCLM. Especially as a part of treatment strategies, we have used intraoperative loco-regional microwave ablation, named microwave coagulo-necrotic therapy (MCN). In this study, we investigate whether or not surgical treatment, combining hepatic resection and/or MCN, is useful for treating BCLM. Methods: Between 1994 and 2014, 33 patients with BCLM were surgically treated at National Hospital Organization Kyushu Medical Center by means...

Zinc Ionophore (Clioquinol) Inhibition of Human ZIP1-Deficient Prostate Tumor Growth in the Mouse Ectopic Xenograft Model: A Zinc Approach for the Efficacious Treatment of Prostate Cancer

Renty B. Franklin, Jing Zou, Yao Zheng, Michael J. Naslund, Leslie C. Costello

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: January 09, 2016

Prostate cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer deaths in males. This is mainly due to the absence of an available efficacious chemotherapy despite decades of research in pursuit of effective treatment approaches. A plausible target for the treatment is the established clinical relationship that the zinc levels in the malignant cells are markedly decreased compared to the normal epithelium in virtually all cases of prostate cancer, and at all stages malignancy. The decrease in zinc results from the downregulation of the functional zinc uptake transporter, ZIP1; which occurs during e...

Long-Term Survival and Quality of Life Outcomes with Multiple Gamma Knife Radiosurgeries for Metastatic Breast Cancer to the Brain: Case Report and Review of Literature

Andrew T Roehrig, Ethan Ferrel, Robert K Fairbanks, Wayne T Lamoreaux, Alexander R MacKay, Jason A Call, John J Demakas, Aaron Wagner, Barton S Cooke, Benjamin C. Ling, Jonathan D. Carlson and Christopher M Lee

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 14, 2015

Metastatic disease to the brain from breast cancer can be treated with multiple modalities. Determining effective therapies for select patients with brain metastases is critical to maximizing survival and quality of life. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) can be an effective option for select patients with brain metastases, and is highly targeted with rapid fall-off of radiation dose outside the treatment zone. The following case illustrates the potential use of multiple Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKRS) sessions for a patient with metastatic breast cancer. In this specific case, repeat treatments...

Patient Reported Outcome in a New Home-Based Rehabilitation Programme for Prostate Cancer Patients

Brigitta R Villumsen and Britta Hordam

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: December 26, 2015

The most optimal and individual exercise plan for men with prostate cancer receiving androgen deprivation therapy needs to be identified. We plan to investigate in these patients the effect of a 12-week home-based exercise programme on physical function, fatigue and metabolic parameters. We will also investigate the satisfaction and experience with the exercise tool. To the best of our knowledge this is the first study to investigate the effect of an interactive video gaming console on a home-based exercise programme. No statistical analysis have been made so far because inclusion is still ong...

Difficulties with Stress Management Faced by Nurse Managers: A Survey of Nurse Managers at a University Hospital

Mariko Kaneko and Ryoko Kakehi

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: December 24, 2015

This study revealed that the stress management support system for nurse managers is inadequate and that nurse managers need to learn better stress management techniques. Moreover, a viable system providing stress management seminars, immediately linking available resources and creating a stress-free work environment needs to be established. Finally, a stress management care system for nurses, including nurse managers, needs to be implemented....

Intravitreal Implant of Dexamethasone for Treatment of Refractory Cystoid Macular Edema Surgically Induced After Pars Plana Vitrectomy

Rino Frisina and Barbara Parolini

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: November 02, 2015

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravitreal implant of Dexamethasone (Ozurdex, Allergan, Irvine, Calif, USA) for the treatment of refractory and chronic cystoid macular edema secondary to PPV and peeling of ERM and internal limiting membrane (ILM) with or without simultaneous cataract surgery. Methods: Seven eyes of 7 patients affected by chronic and refractory CME for at least 3 months after vitrectomy and peeling of ERM and ILM, were recruited. All patients underwent intravitreal injection of 0.7 mg of Dexamethasone (IVO injection). Demographic data, preoperative and postope...

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: October 16, 2015

Purpose: This study examined the seemingly uninjured eye of soldiers with blast injuries involving the head, face, and fellow eye to obtain insight into primary blast ocular injuries. Methods: Serial exams were performed on nineteen U.S. Army Soldiers with a combat-related blast injury involving the head, face and either eye for effects of primary blast trauma in the clinically unaffected eye. Outcome measures included corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), endothelial cell density (ECD), corneal hysteresis (CH), corneal resistance factor (CRF), cornea compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc...

Symptomatic Yuxta-articular Facet Cyst: A Case Report

J Miguel Rodriguez Solera, Ana M Cervan de la Haba, Miguel S Hirschfeld Leon and Enrique Guerado Parra

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 30, 2015

We report a case of 66 years-old male with left leg pain that began six months earlier. The pain was aggravated by sitting or climbing stairs but was relieved in the standing position. The physical examination was consistent with a left radiculopathy without sensory or motor deficit. His initial MRI lumbar spine demonstrated a cystic mass with T1 and T2 hyperintensity on the L3-L4 level with considerable thecal sac and nerve root compression. The lesion originated next to the left L3-4 facet joint and extended centrally under the lamina of L3 and L4. A surgical treatment was offered to the pat...

Fracture-Dislocation of the Upper Thoracic Spine without Neurologic Associated Injury: Two Cases Report

J Miguel Rodriguez Solera, Ana Maria Cervan de la Haba, Miguel S Hirschfeld Leon and Enrique Guerado Parra

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 22, 2015

We report a case of 51 years-old male with no past medical history, who was brought to our Hospital after falling from a 10 meters high roof. He had 15 points at Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and a completely normal neurological examination. A whole body computerized tomography (CT) scan was performed and diagnosed a fracture-dislocation at T8-T9. Acute surgery was decided, performing an open reduction and internal fixation with pedicle screws from T6 to T1. Clinical outcome was favorable....
